When you hire a cab for a trip out of the city you are not just paying for the ride. You are paying for the driver, his meals, his accommodation on longer trips, and his idle time while he waits around at your hotel. On a three-day run to Shimla that alone can add several thousand rupees before you have gone anywhere. On a ten-day Ladakh trip it becomes the largest single line on your bill.
With a self drive car you pay for the vehicle. That is the whole cost.
But the money is not really why people switch. It is the freedom.
Stop where the view is worth stopping. Leave at four in the morning because the forecast turned and you want to be over the pass before the weather does. Add a night in Chitkul because it looked better than the plan on paper. Play whatever you want at whatever volume, have whatever conversation you want, and take the long way round because somebody spotted a sign.
None of that is possible with a driver in the front seat and a return schedule to keep. For couples, families and solo travellers heading into the hills, self drive is simply the better way to do it.

Times assume a normal run without long stops. Build in margin during monsoon and winter — the Manali and Spiti roads in particular can turn a nine-hour day into a fourteen-hour one without much warning.
The routes in detail
Chandigarh to Shimla
The most popular hill run out of the city, and the right first trip if you have not driven in the mountains before. It is properly surfaced the whole way, the climb is gradual, and there is plenty of traffic around if anything goes wrong.
Any car in our fleet handles it. A hatchback is genuinely fine. Take an SUV if there are more than four of you or if you are carrying a lot, not because the road demands it.

Chandigarh to Manali
Long rather than difficult. Most of it is highway, the last stretch is hill road, and the whole thing is comfortably done in a day if you start early.
Comfort matters more than capability here. Eight or nine hours in a car changes what you care about, and the Innova Hycross is what we recommend most for it — seven seats, a real boot, and ride quality that keeps everyone in the back happy. The Scorpio N is the pick if you might continue past Manali toward Sissu or Keylong, where the surface starts to deteriorate.
Chandigarh to Amritsar
The easy one. Flat, fast, well surfaced, and doable in four hours or so. A sedan is perfectly suited. Take a 7-seater only if the group needs the seats.
Most people go for the Golden Temple, which means an overnight or a very early start. Plenty of our customers do it as a day trip and are back the same night — one of the things a self drive car makes possible that a cab booking really does not.
Chandigarh to Spiti Valley
This is where the trip changes character. Roughly 400 km depending on your route, realistically two days of driving, and a road surface that ranges from good tarmac to loose gravel to water crossings depending on the season and the section.
A 4×4 with proper ground clearance is strongly recommended. The Thar Roxx 4×4 is our first suggestion — five doors and a boot that takes real luggage, which the smaller Thar does not. Fuel planning matters on this route. Between Kaza and Manali the gaps between stops are long, and it is not a road to be optimistic on. We will mark them for you at handover.
Chandigarh to Leh–Ladakh
The big one. Seven hundred kilometres plus, two to three days of driving each way, high passes, thin air and long stretches with nothing on either side.
The Fortuner and the Thar Roxx are the two we send up there. Both have the capability and, just as importantly, the reliability for a route where a breakdown is a genuine problem rather than an inconvenience.
Book early. The May-to-September window is the only realistic one and the 4x4s go first.
Matching the car to the road
Tarmac routes — Shimla, Kasauli, Amritsar, Dharamshala. You do not need a 4×4. Any car in the fleet handles these comfortably and a hatchback or sedan costs less to run. If there are five or more of you, take a 7-seater for the legroom rather than the capability.
Long highway days — Manali, Amritsar with family. Comfort over ground clearance. Innova Hycross first, Scorpio N if the surface might get patchy at the far end.
Rough routes — Spiti, Chandratal, high passes, Leh. This is where a 4×4 earns its rental. Thar Roxx for groups with luggage, Jimny for two or three travelling light.
When arriving matters — weddings, corporate trips, milestone drives. The Fortuner does work a sedan cannot, and handles almost any road in India while doing it.

Tell us your route when you book. It genuinely changes what we do — a car going to Spiti gets prepared differently from one going to Amritsar, and we will go through fuel planning on the stretches where stops are far apart.

Before you set off
Check the tyres at handover. We will walk you through it. On a hill road, tyre condition matters more than almost any other single factor, and it is the thing people are least likely to look at.
Record the condition together. We note existing marks and the fuel level with you present, so there is nothing to dispute when you bring the car back.
Keep your documents in the car. Licence and photo ID in the glovebox, not in a bag in the boot. You will be asked for them at checkposts on the Himachal and Ladakh routes.
Plan your fuel stops. Particularly for Spiti and Ladakh. We will mark the gaps for you.
Tell us if plans change. Extending a booking is usually straightforward if we know in reasonable time.
