If you have never rented a self drive car before, the process sounds more complicated than it is. Most people expect paperwork, deposits held for weeks, and an argument at the end about a scratch that was already there.
It should not work like that, and here it does not.
This guide walks through exactly what happens from the moment you enquire to the moment you hand the keys back — what you need to bring, what you pay, what to check, and where first-timers usually get caught out.
The process, start to finish
1. Tell us your dates and what you need it for. Not just the car — the trip. A city runabout for three days and a Spiti run need different vehicles and different preparation. We would rather ask than guess.
2. We confirm availability and quote you. The rate covers the vehicle and comprehensive insurance. Fuel is separate. Nothing else gets added later.
3. Send your documents. Licence and photo ID. Verification takes minutes.
4. Pay a small advance to hold the car. The balance and the refundable security deposit are settled at handover.
5. Collect, or we deliver. Pick up from our Sector 3 office, or we bring the car to your door anywhere in Chandigarh at no extra charge. If you are flying in, we also deliver a self drive car near Chandigarh airport at your landing time. We are open 24 hours, so a five in the morning collection is routine.
6. Handover. We walk you through the controls, note any existing marks together, record the fuel level, and go through the terms before you take the keys. First-timers get a longer briefing — ask as many questions as you want.
7. Return. Bring the car back with the same fuel level. We check it over with you present, and the deposit comes back.
What documents you need
- A valid Indian driving licence. Original, not a photocopy or a photo on your phone.
- A government photo ID — Aadhaar card or passport.
- Address proof, for first-time renters.

Bring the originals to handover. Digital copies are fine for the initial verification, but the physical licence needs to be with you in the car — you will be asked for it at checkposts on the Himachal routes.
About the security deposit
This is the part people worry about most, and fairly — it is where the rental industry has earned its reputation.
The deposit is refundable. It is held against damage, traffic fines and fuel shortfall, and it comes back when you return the car in the condition you took it.
Two things protect you here, and you should insist on both from any rental company, not just us:
Record the condition together at handover. Walk around the car with whoever is giving you the keys. Point out existing scratches, dents and kerbed alloys. Get it written down. Photograph anything you are unsure about.
Check the fuel level and note it. You return it at the same level. If you collect it at three-quarters, you return it at three-quarters.
Do those two things and there is nothing left to dispute at the end. Most deposit arguments in this industry come from a handover where nobody wrote anything down.
Fuel, mileage and what is included
Included: comprehensive insurance, 24/7 roadside assistance, the car cleaned and serviced before handover, doorstep delivery across Chandigarh.
Not included: fuel. You collect with a certain level and return at the same level.
Mileage: plans are flexible and depend on the vehicle and duration. We confirm the terms upfront rather than recalculating anything after you return. If you are doing a long outstation run, tell us at the booking stage so we can set the right plan.
Tolls and challans are the renter’s responsibility. Any traffic fine incurred during your rental is settled from the deposit if it arrives after you have returned the car.
What to check before you drive off
Even if you are in a hurry, spend five minutes on this.
Tyres. Tread depth and condition, including the spare. On a hill road this matters more than any other single thing on the car, and it is what people are least likely to look at.
Existing damage. Walk the full circumference. Look at the bumpers, the alloy edges and the windscreen.
Fuel gauge. Note the level.
Lights, wipers, horn. Ten seconds each.
Documents in the car. Registration, insurance and PUC should all be in the glovebox. Check they are there before you leave, not at a checkpost.
Spare, jack and tools. Open the boot floor and confirm they are present.

Where first-time renters get caught out
Booking the wrong size car. People book by price, then discover the boot will not take four suitcases. Tell us how many of you there are and how much luggage, and we will tell you honestly which car fits — including when a cheaper one would do.
Assuming a 4×4 is needed for the hills. Shimla, Kasauli, Chail, Dharamshala and Amritsar are surfaced the whole way. A hatchback handles them comfortably. Not mentioning outstation plans at booking. Inter-state travel needs the right paperwork sorted beforehand. It is straightforward if we know in advance and a problem if we do not.
Underestimating drive times. Manali is eight or nine hours from Chandigarh, not five. Our outstation guide has realistic timings for the main routes.
Returning with less fuel than they collected. It comes out of the deposit. Fill up before you get back.
